A Tasty Year: Looking Back on 2017

2017 was another big year for me and this little baking hobby of mine. Every year since starting “The Buttercream Blonde” I have received more orders and requests from friends, family and referrals, and I am so thankful for all the support that I had this year!

I have had a lot of people ask me how I got into baking in the first place. I always start with crediting my mom and her good family genetics—she comes from a family of creative minds and talented bakers. Growing up the holidays were spent gathered together raving over all the tasty foods that were brought by various relatives,  comparing ingredients and cooking hacks, and coming up with the most aesthetically appealing way to display the meal.

In addition to good genes, my mom encouraged me to cook and bake “the basics” at home when I was young—presumably because she wanted me to bake my way into some nice boy’s heart and get him to put a ring on it. Congratulations, mom, it worked.

Fast forward about 10 years to 2015, and I found myself being let go from my first job out of college. Even though I actively filled my days job-searching for the next couple months, I had a lot of free time at home before I started my next role. I began experimenting with some of the crazy recipes I had pinned on Pinterest back in college, but never had time to actually try, and posted the photos on social media. Over time, family, friends and acquaintances from school started reaching out to see if I could bake various desserts for their events—the rest is pretty much history.

It’s been 3 years and I’ve baked for 25+ weddings (including my own brother), started a blog featuring my recipes, registered under the MN Cottage Food Law to legally bake and sell out of my home, and accomplished a lot of other fun baking feats that I never expected.

Every year as Christmas draws near and I get all sappy during the holiday season, I begin to reflect on all the support I’ve received during the previous 12 months. The nice comments people have given me on my desserts, the inspiration my friends and family have helped spark, the people (both those close to me and those who were practically-strangers) who have asked me to bake for their events and the brides who have trusted me to provide the treats for one of the biggest days of their life—WOW and THANK YOU! Your support means the world to me.

I’m so excited for 2018 and all the baking adventures it’s going to take me on, but for now, I’ve got an order of 20 holiday apple pies and 3 party cakes that I’ve got to wrap up, so I’ll catch you soon with my next recipe!

Thank you!
